Guest Artist at MUCEM-Marseille 2021–2022

From September 2021 to June 2022, Christiane Jatahy presented her work for the first time in Marseille, as part of her close collaboration with the MUCEM, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations in Marseille, France, where she was Guest Artist.
Throughout the year, she brought her personal touch to the museum’s cultural programming by organizing encounters, debates, film screenings, and performances that were essential to her artistic research and in dialogue with the MUCEM’s program.

This long-term invitation gave rise to the project Re-connaitre (To Remember in Order Not to Forget), a unique installation-performance that nourished the research for her future 2022 creation, After the Silence.

To prepare the project After the Silence, focused on the issue of colonization — during the violent period of slavery — and its consequences up to the present day, Christiane Jatahy proposed a dialogue through live interviews with people from different backgrounds in Marseille, who carry in their present or past memories they wished to share.
A story about an ancestor? A treasured object? The absence of memory when the family tree has been violently severed?
A moment of listening, of voices, of dialogue — a large collective of voices blending and standing out through individual and collective memories.
A living video installation, in constant transformation, filmed in another space of the MUCEM, at the very moment we are watching it.
